About This Video

Every Wi‑Fi router can be an access point—old or new—the technique is basically the same. In this video I show you a quick and easy way to reuse that extra router you already have, especially if you need to extend Wi‑Fi to another room and you don’t have the cash to buy a repeater or access point right away. I start with the most important first step: factory reset. I show you where the reset button usually is (sometimes a finger button, sometimes a pinhole), then I connect using my phone, log in with the default admin/admin, and rename the Wi‑Fi (SSID) so you can easily identify it. After that, I walk you through the crucial setting that will save your network from headaches: disabling DHCP on the router you’re converting. If you leave DHCP on, you’ll end up with two DHCP servers fighting each other, and that’s when your network gets messed up. Once DHCP is disabled, I reboot the router, then connect it to the main router using an Ethernet cable—but I make sure to plug into the LAN/switch ports (1–4), not the WAN/Internet port. Finally, I verify everything with a speed test and explain what to expect: older routers may cap your speed because of their hardware, but they still work great as a budget access point. I also show a newer router example where you can just select “Access Point Mode” or even set it up as a wireless repeater with one-click options.
