About This Video

If your Windows desktop icons are suddenly spaced way too far apart and they’re eating up your whole screen, this is the quick fix I use. In the video, I show you why the usual right-click options—like Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid—won’t solve this specific problem. Instead, I go straight to the real settings that control horizontal and vertical icon spacing. I walk you step-by-step through opening Run, launching Registry Editor (regedit), and navigating to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop > WindowMetrics. From there, I change IconSpacing to -1250 and IconVerticalSpacing to -1100. After that, you just restart your PC so the changes actually take effect. When I come back after the reboot, you can see the icons are clumped back together like normal, and you can still choose small/large icons depending on how much space you want on your desktop.
