After tasting over 200 different whiskies in 2025, I’ve narrowed it down to the 10 absolute best drams I tried this year. These weren’t necessarily the rarest or the most expensive (although a few definitely were!) — they were the whiskies that truly stood out in terms of flavour, balance, complexity, and sheer enjoyment. This list spans Australia, Scotland, China and beyond, with a mix of: • award-winning Tasmanian single malts • beautifully aged independent bottlings • surprising newcomers • peated beasts, elegant grains, and rich fortified-casks Some of my highest-scoring whiskies this year were unreleased cask samples, so they aren’t included — this list focuses on bottles you could have purchased, or might run into again. If you’ve tried something incredible this year, let me know in the comments — I love discovering new distilleries and sharing recommendations with the community. 00:00 – Introduction 01:42 – Tied for 3rd Place – Part 1 02:33 – Tied for 3rd Place – Part 2 03:29 – Tied for 3rd Place – Part 3 04:28 – Tied for 3rd Place – Part 4 05:12 – 2nd Place Whiskies - Part 1 06:00 – 2nd Place Whiskies - Part 2 06:32 – My Top 3 Whiskies of 2025 - Part 1 06:59 – My Top 3 Whiskies of 2025 - Part 2 07:44 – My Top 3 Whiskies of 2025 - Part 3 I'm Nath Martyn, The Whisky Scribe! About This Video

I’m fortunate enough to try a lot of whisky throughout the year—like, a lot—and in 2025 I tasted just over 200 different drams. Because I’m a bit OCD with my approach, I spreadsheet the hell out of it: specs, notes, and scores for every single whisky. That means at the end of the year I can filter everything down to the absolute best bottles I tried—based on flavour, balance, complexity, and sheer enjoyment, not just price tag or rarity. In this video I count down my Top 10 whiskies of 2025, clumped into three score bands because I had a bunch of ties. You’ll hear why aged Australian whisky can be mind-blowingly harmonious (and also eye-wateringly expensive thanks to our high angel’s share), why I rate independent bottlers so highly for special older Scotch, and why you shouldn’t write off single grain—especially once it’s had a couple of decades to properly come alive. I also share a genuine surprise: a Chinese peated single malt that smashed my expectations. My biggest takeaway? Build a network of whisky mates who swap samples—because it’s the best way to try rare, limited releases and expand your palate at the same time.
