Today I’m reviewing Powers Irish Whiskey – Three Swallows, a classic Irish whiskey with a surprising claim to fame… it’s closely linked to the creation of the Irish Coffee. In this review, I break down the nose, palate and finish, share a bit of the history behind Powers, and of course — show you how to make a proper Irish Coffee using the whiskey that helped make it famous. Powers is often overlooked compared to names like Jameson and Bushmills, but it has a long history and an enjoyable palate. About This Video

In this video I’m reviewing Powers Three Swallows—one of those classic Irish whiskies that tends to get overlooked next to Jameson and Bushmills, but absolutely deserves a look. I cover the history (Powers goes back to 1791), how it survived the Irish whiskey downturn, and why it’s made at Midleton today. I also dig into the “Three Swallows” name—both the coachman story (three crew, three swallows, and no legal drink-driving limits back then) and the swallow migration link that signalled distillation season. From a whisky nerd perspective, I break down what’s in the bottle: a traditional single pot still whiskey (malted + unmalted barley), triple distilled, aged in second/third fill bourbon casks and finished in sherry casks. It’s non-chill filtered, has colour added for consistency, sits at 40% ABV, and in Australia it’s around $90. On the nose I get a baked-goods sweetness, slightly green/unripened fruit, and a faint sherry note; on the palate it’s all about that creamy, mouth-coating texture with light orchard fruit and a touch of baking spice. The finish dips away then comes back—so I call it medium—with toasted oak and lingering sweetness. Then I make a proper Irish Coffee (because Powers has a genuine link to the original): 45 ml Irish whiskey, 2 tsp brown sugar, ~120 ml strong hot coffee, and slightly whipped cream floated over a spoon. It’s warm, balanced, and honestly a brilliant “hair of the dog” option for the morning after.
