E150a Colour In Whisky | Why Colour Is Added To Whisky And How To Know When It Is

Did you know there is a secret ingredient that can be added to Irish and Scottish whiskies without having to be disclosed on the bottle? It’s E150a colour and it can slightly (or drastically) change the appearance of a whisky. There is so much controversy around this additive, and some confusion, that I wanted to share what E150a is, why and how it is used, and how to find out if it’s in your favourite bottle of scotch. I even conducted my own little experiment to show how I was able to use this colour to make an underaged whisky look like a much older dram that spent time in several different casks.
