We start where pretty much everyone starts—Citadel—because whether you love it or hate it, it’s the yardstick. My take is that Citadel is the best range on the market… not because every single paint is flawless, but because it’s the “language” of the hobby. From brand-new painters to Golden Demon-level painters, people still use it, teach with it, and reference it constantly. We get into what makes a paint range “best” beyond just coverage: accessibility, clear systems (base/layer/shade/contrast), matched sprays, and how easy it is to learn from the wider community. We also call out the quirks—pots, lid gunk, and the fact Contrast can range from wash-like to basically opaque (Black Legion, I’m looking at you). Then we move onto Army Painter as the big direct competitor: dropper bottles, tons of colour-matched sprays, agitators in every bottle, and Speedpaint 2 being genuinely solid—plus credit where it’s due for how they handled the reactivation criticism. We also talk about how their shift toward Fanatic paints may have improved quality, but potentially loses the old “budget-friendly” edge.
