About This Video

This one’s a bit different: I’m off camera and we’re basically letting Tommie Suello run a proper “first lesson” the way he’d do it with a student. It’s long, but it’s the kind of long that actually matters—because the whole point is building awareness of what’s happening on your palette and why your paint behaves the way it does. We get into the real fundamentals that quietly control everything: diluting paint, setting consistency, brush control, and how different stroke types change the finish you get on the model. Before we dive into the practical bit, we also chat about judging and painting competitions—especially Salute—and why process beats results. Tommie makes a big point that if you get obsessed with results, you’ll get bummed out; if you get invested in the journey, the results become a symptom of good process. We also talk about product talk and jargon, and why there’s no “best” paint or brush—only what’s best for you, your budget, your goals, and (crucially) your skill set in getting the best out of whatever’s on your desk. If you’re new, this is the video that stops you guessing. If you’ve been painting a while, it’s the one that helps you diagnose what’s going wrong and fix it with intention.
