About This Video

I hate speed painting. I’m really bad at it, and my best stuff (like my Dark Angels) takes me bloody forever. But I can’t sit here moaning about it while not doing anything, so I forced the issue: paint 20 minis fast. Modiphius sent me the Fallout: Factions starter set, I told my mates everything was built and painted (it wasn’t), and I had a game coming up that weekend—so this is not a tutorial. This is me panic painting and seeing what happens. I split the box into two gangs—The Operators and The Pack—and aimed for roughly six hours per team. I started with my Harder & Steenbeck Ultra: black prime, then a white zenithal using Tamiya Flat White (which I probably over-thinned). Then it was brush work: Imperial Fist Contrast for yellow (mistake), Snakebite Leather for boots and bits, Gilliman Flesh for skin, and Vallejo Metal Color Steel for quick metallics. I tried AK enamel wargame washes so I could clean back with thinner and a cotton bud, then slammed Shadow Soil on the bases. Big takeaways: the zenithal wasn’t worth it for this job, and yellow contrast over black is horrible—friends don’t let friends do it. The enamel wash was a bit grimdark for what I wanted, but being able to remove and adjust it is brilliant. I’m not winning awards here, but I got painted minis on the table—and that’s the point.
