About This Video

If there’s one thing that scares me more than anything else in miniature painting, it’s painting faces. I’ve seen enough absolute horror shows online to happily stick a helmet on everything forever… but I want to change that. So in this video I basically brute-forced the problem: I stuck a load of heads on corks and painted ten different faces, following a bunch of tutorials from creators I rate (and a couple of methods that are properly spicy). To make it even more ridiculous, I used a completely stupid grading system: how easy the tutorial was to follow, what little tips and tricks I nicked from it, and how close my results were to the original. I start with the official Games Workshop skin tone video (pale, dark, and tanned), and I quickly learn that “fleshy circles” where eyes should be is… disconcerting. Then I jump into Duncan’s three approaches (speed paint, intermediate, artisan), and that’s where things get real: layering thin, adding life with purples/pinks, and—most importantly—painting my first proper eyes. Later I try Artis Opus (and slightly balls it up with my mixes), then two brilliant Painting Coach methods that I honestly had a blast with, and finally a Darren Latham-style approach that’s loaded with nuggets but demands control. The big takeaway: practice works fast, and if I can do it, you absolutely can.
