About This Video

In this episode it’s me and Geoff holding the fort while Ross is off living his best life somewhere sunnier than the UK. We start with the new Kill Team starter and, honestly, I can’t quite believe how “gateway” it’s become. The box is set up to get people playing fast: coloured plastic so you can tell what’s yours, cardboard terrain, a board, lighter rules, and even a super stripped-back intro mission. I’ve had to backpedal a bit on my old stance that Kill Team is too rules-heavy for beginners—because the rules feel softer now, and it’s a genuinely good on-ramp into 40K if you just want to play without committing your entire evening. Then we pivot into the big chat: Golden Demon, the wave of YouTuber reactions after Spiel, and whether the competition needs to change. A lot of the discussion circles around consistency, what the judges are actually looking for, and the fact that even winners sometimes seem unsure why their piece placed. Richard Gray’s result becomes the lightning rod here—because when you see that level of painting in the flesh, you naturally expect it to go further. My takeaway is simple: Golden Demon is still inspiring as hell, but if the community keeps feeling like the “formula” is unknowable, GW may need to rethink judging transparency (or who’s on the judging panel) before the discourse turns the whole thing sour.
