About This Video

I’ve been trying to learn airbrushing this year, but up to now it’s mostly been single miniatures. In this video I finally take the plunge and airbrush my first “army” (okay, I can already hear you—Deathwing Army Set plus a bunch of extra Terminators from boxes and bits and bobs). I also decided to make life needlessly hard by doing a split scheme: my extra Terminators become the Penitent Blades—chipped, battered, and grimy—while the Deathwing from the box stay cleaner as the backup arriving later in the narrative. For the Penitent Blades I prime white, go all-over pink, then pre-shade with Tamiya Flat White (I picked it up from Henry at Cult of Paint and I bloody love it). Then I do my favourite “feels like cheating” yellow method: contrast through the airbrush so the pink turns orange and the white turns yellow. I try masking putty to keep that airbrushed look, learn the hard way that putty droops if you leave it overnight, and I end up sacking off an AK mix in favour of air paints that behave better. For the Deathwing I follow Henry’s approach and smash out 15 models’ armour in about an hour and a half—an absolute endorphin rush after all that masking. I also talk honestly about oil washes vs panel liner, tip-dry, trigger fatigue on the H&S Ultra, and a bunch of “firsts” and mistakes (including the first Space Marine faces I’ve ever painted).
