In this video I’m finally getting around to part two of our 3rd gen Tacoma rear door skin install (16-23 Tacoma). I always tell people: start on the passenger side first. That way, by the time you move to the driver side—the side you see every day—your install is dialed and looks perfect. I show you exactly why these skins exist in the first place: the lower door panels get hammered by boots, tools, pets, and gear, and they scratch stupid-easy. The skins are meant to prevent that, or cover existing scratches, and keep your interior looking clean for the long haul. I walk through my full three-step prep process (spray cleaner, Gyeon Prep, then alcohol), then I hit the panel with a heat gun to dry out any remaining moisture and finish the surface prep. From there it’s a bottom-up install: tack, line up tight to the plastic, work around the speaker with about a 1/16" gap, and use heat to stretch and shrink the vinyl where needed—especially on the tricky curved pieces. The biggest takeaway is post-heating. I’m looking for about 185° (edges are the most important), because if you skip post heat, that’s when edges lift and get caught in high-traffic areas like the handles.
