It’s not every day we get to rip out a heavy metal aftermarket grille and swap it back to something that actually makes sense for a 16–23 Tacoma. In this video I pull a custom metal grille that’s gotta be over a 1/4-inch thick, and it’s got the TSS sensor sitting behind it… except it’s obviously not working. The big takeaway right out of the gate: I do not recommend running a metal grille in a plastic shroud. They don’t expand and shrink the same, and you’re basically asking for cracks, broken tabs, and a nightmare fitment situation. You’ll watch us get into some real “surgery room” stuff—plastic welding the shroud, reinforcing broken areas, and using CA glue (aka the stuff that’ll have you in the corner trying to bite it off your fingers like a chipmunk if you mess up). This isn’t the pretty, perfect install we always show. This is the reality of fixing a pre-modified truck where stuff is missing, hardware is gone, and you’ve gotta improvise with washers, bolts, and flange nuts to get it done right. By the end, we get our Pro Grille clipped in solid, TSS-compatible, and back to a setup that actually works with the truck instead of fighting it. If you’re wondering if you can convert from a metal grille back to a Pro Grille—the answer is yes, but you might need some reconstructive work first.
