About This Video

When you’re cleaning vinyl by hand, the quickest way to ruin your results is letting your cleaning pad turn into a filthy dust rag. Once that pad is loaded up, you’re not really cleaning anymore—you’re just spreading dirt from one record to the next. In this video I walk through how I stop that happening, starting with the simple stuff: keeping pads protected from airborne dust in the first place. If you’re using a GrooveWasher-style kit that sits out by the turntable (and I get it—they look beautiful and they’re convenient), the pad being exposed is the obvious weak point. I cover the two practical options: store it away, or use a Perspex cover so it stays handy but protected. Then I show exactly how I clean the pad when it inevitably gets grubby: remove it from the handle, soak and squeeze it repeatedly in distilled water, scrub with a tiny amount of dish soap, rinse until there’s no foaming, squeeze out as much moisture as possible, and air dry. I also share two extra tips for anyone using a vacuum record cleaning machine: use a goat hair brush to spread fluid evenly, and follow with a velvet pad for a bit of mechanical action before you vacuum it all off.
