About This Video

In this video I joined a little challenge: recreate movie shots using ONLY my Canon R10 setup and whatever I had around the house. I started with the framing problem right away— the reference shot is from above with the camera pointing straight down, and I simply don’t have a rig or ceiling mount for that. My tripod maxes out, so I had to cheat the angle and make it work. On top of that, my lens is 24mm on an APS-C sensor, so it’s pretty tight, not that wide “movie still” look—so I leaned into cropping and composition instead of pretending my gear could do something it can’t. From there I built a super simple lighting setup: a key light from the floor-side angle, plus pocket lights to create that yellow accent. I literally shoved a pocket light into a cupboard and matched the hue on a second one to keep it consistent. To make the pose work, I used a very “sexy” heart-shaped pillow to get my head in the right spot while I kept checking the reference on my monitor. The big takeaway: you can learn a ton by recreating shots with limited resources—limitations force you to problem-solve, and that’s exactly what beginner filmmaking is all about.
