About This Video

If you’re trying to level up your YouTube studio audio, this video is my quick “worst to BEST” comparison of four real-world mic options. I start with the built-in camera microphone (aka the “I have zero budget” option). It works, but it’s super echoey and you hear the whole room—definitely not ideal, but it’s still a way to get started. From there I jump to the RØDE VideoMicro on-camera mic, which was actually what I started with. The sound is more direct than the built-in mic, but you’ll still pick up a lot of room noise. Then I show my go-to wireless option, the Hollyland Lark M2, which is awesome because you’re not attached to the camera—you can walk around and keep consistent audio across the room. Finally, I show my highest quality setup: the Sennheiser MKE600 boom mic, recorded into a Zoom H4 (not straight into the camera). It’s meant to be very direct, with minimal room sound, and for a YouTube setup like this it’s basically everything you need. My main takeaway: don’t stress if you start cheap, but remember audio is 50%—sometimes more important—than the video itself.
