About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down the real first step to starting a videography business—and it’s not buying a new camera. Yes, you can start with the Canon R10, but whether you’re successful isn’t on the camera… it’s on you. Before you even think about landing your “first client,” you need something to show: a portfolio that proves you can create solid work. My go-to advice is to start making spec commercials (not paid by any brand) to showcase your skills behind the camera. Pick a product you actually like and shoot it like a real job—just like I did with a backpack because I wanted footage in the fashion niche. That niche part matters: ask yourself what you like and what kind of brands you want to work with, then build content around that direction. And if you’re not ready for a full website yet, I keep it simple: use YouTube as free storage for your portfolio. Upload your spec work, leave it there, and keep building. If you do upload, tag me—I'll even go over it with you and tell you what you can improve. Next step after this: I’ve got another video on the five pieces of camera gear you’ll need for that first client.
