About This Video

I honestly didn’t think I’d ever go back to seriously considering an ultrawide, but LG’s new GX9 is the one that made me pause. This is a 45-inch OLED with an aggressive 800R curve, a first-of-its-kind 5K ultrawide resolution (5120x2160), and LG’s dual-mode feature. In the main mode you get 5K at up to 165Hz, and with one button it flips to 2560x1080 at 330Hz in a couple seconds—basically the ultrawide version of the 32-inch dual-mode LG I’ve been using and loving at home. Design-wise, LG are absolutely nailing it lately: no chin bezel, no front logos, and it looks insanely clean on a monitor arm. For gaming, the 5K mode is where this thing shines—single-player open-world stuff looks unbelievable, and I genuinely don’t think there’s a monitor I’d pick above this for that use case. HDR is solid, brightness is good for OLED, factory white point is basically perfect, and OLED response times are exactly what you’d expect. But I do have a big complaint: LG’s scaling in the smaller screen modes is still messed up, and it kills me because ASUS have proven you can do this properly. Also, I’d skip DisplayPort 2.1 here—HDMI 2.1 was flawless for me, while DP gave me HDR and dual-mode issues. If you’ve got a truly beefy GPU and can stomach the $2,000 price, this is one of the most impressive premium OLEDs you can buy.
