About This Video

MSI told me this is the fastest RTX 5090 on the planet, and after testing it, I kind of get why. The 5090 Lightning is absurdly overbuilt: a full-coverage cold plate like a custom water block, a 360mm AIO, carbon fiber accents, and—wildly—two 16-pin power connectors. It also has a 1,000W power limit and a ridiculous 40-phase VRM, which is clearly aimed at extreme overclocking once you’re pushing 900W+ and trying to break benchmark records. Out of the box it runs 3.0GHz flat, which is a big factory OC versus the Founders Edition, but in real games the uplift was smaller than the clocks suggest (a few percent depending on the title). Where it gets interesting is heavy loads: in FurMark it can pull over 900W and still hold 3GHz, while the FE gets power throttled hard. With some tuning I got close to 3.3GHz—over 20% higher than stock clocks—and the 3DMark scores were genuinely nuts, landing near voltage-modded and LN2 runs without any modding. Cooling-wise it’s a bit better than a more normal 360mm hybrid card, but not by a massive margin—although the default fan profile is insanely quiet. And yes, it has a big front screen for monitoring or playing videos, because of course it does.
