Pimax just dropped the Crystal Super, and on paper it’s kind of absurd: 3840×3840 per eye, which is basically almost 30 million pixels in a VR headset. In this video I put that “retina level” claim into real-world context, especially against the Bigscreen Beyond 2 (which I tested recently) and the Quest 3. The big story is that yes, you can absolutely see the extra detail—things like thin lines on the steering wheel display, distant fence lines, and overall shimmer reduction are genuinely impressive inside the sweet spot. But specs aren’t the whole headset. I talk through comfort (it’s still big and heavy, but I can do 3–4 hour sessions if I wear it right), inside-out tracking (flawless for my sim use), motorized IPD (cool idea, but the auto part isn’t reliable yet), and dynamic foveated rendering (fast eye tracking, but the lower-res periphery was distracting and I didn’t see performance gains on my system). The biggest takeaway: the lenses and black levels matter more than raw pixel count. After using the Beyond 2, the Crystal Super’s softness and chromatic fringing off-center—and miniLED “dark gray” blacks with blooming at night—kept me from switching, even though the Super is clearly a higher tier than a Quest 3.
