In this episode of Motorcycle Rewind we take a closer look at the 1965 Yamaha YM-1, Yamaha’s first real performance street bike and a machine that helped establish the brand in the American market. Back in the mid-1960s Honda was dominating with bikes like the Honda CB77 Super Hawk, but Yamaha decided to go a different route. Instead of a smooth four-stroke twin, they built a lightweight two-stroke twin that was faster, louder, and just a little bit wild. The YM-1 was nicknamed the Catalina, inspired by Yamaha’s racing success at the famous Catalina Grand Prix. With dual carbs, a five-speed transmission, and Yamaha’s innovative Autolube oil injection system, this 305cc two-stroke helped kick off Yamaha’s reputation for building quick, lightweight motorcycles. In this episode we take a closer look at this early Yamaha performance machine and see what made the YM-1 such an important part of motorcycle history.
