About This Video

In this episode at SNEC x MEDI.CUE, I sat down with Prof Jodhbir S Mehta to unpack what looks like a “risky” move on paper: leaving the UK after training at Moorfields and building a career in Singapore. We talked through the real reasons behind that leap—how he wanted experience outside the UK, how he first visited Singapore on holiday (2004/2005), and why he felt this was a place he could genuinely live and work in, even if it started as “just a year” of fellowship and research. Prof Jod shared how one opportunity snowballed into the next: coming for a year and a half, joining a group that secured a major grant (around 2007–2008) focused on cornea and glaucoma, and then being asked to lead a team. What really stuck with me was his mindset—evidence-based medicine keeps us honest, and the best clinicians he saw early on were the ones who did research. Singapore gave him the runway to do 60–70% clinical work and 30–40% research, stay close to cutting-edge innovation, and evolve his career over time. And yes—two years turned into sixteen, which says a lot about how the environment can “nourish” both development and innovation in ophthalmology.
