This is the final episode of my SNEC x MEDI.CUE interview series, and I sat down with Prof Jodhbir S Mehta to talk about what actually sustains a career in ophthalmology—passion, mindset, and staying open. I asked him directly what advice he’d give to young ophthalmologists, researchers, and even med students like me who are trying to figure out how to prepare for this journey. One idea that really stuck with me is being open-minded enough to go see new things—even in a different country—because once your thinking becomes closed, you start excluding possibilities without even realizing it. Prof Jod also shared how important it is to find something you genuinely enjoy, because the reality is research and clinical work come with constant ups and downs. Papers get rejected, grants don’t land, and progress can feel slow—but if you actually love the topic, you’ll still have a reason to keep moving “forward, forward, forward.” He also reminded me that you’re not alone: build a community, sound things off each other, and create a support system. For me, this episode is a reminder that the bright future of ophthalmology isn’t just the tech—it’s the people who keep pushing, even when others call their ideas “crazy.”
