In this 2026 step-by-step tutorial, I show you how you can set up Google Ads Dynamic Remarketing for your Shopify store using Google Tag Manager. I start from the Google Ads side (Tools → Data manager) and explain the Google tag setup options. If you already installed the Google tag manually (like I did), you just need the right Conversion ID, then you can build the Dynamic Remarketing tag inside GTM using the Google Ads tag template (now Google gives one template for both remarketing and dynamic remarketing). I also explain the real difference: normal Google Ads remarketing is mainly for service-based websites, but for eCommerce you should use Dynamic Remarketing because you need product-level data for retargeting (view item, add to cart, checkout, purchase, etc.). Then I walk you through the key requirements from Google’s documentation: you must send the event name, event value, and an items array that includes item ID plus the Google business vertical (for Shopify eCommerce, it’s Retail). Finally, I test everything in GTM Preview/Tag Assistant, fix a small items parameter mistake, and confirm in Google Ads (tag activity/events) that the parameters are coming correctly. After this, you can repeat the same process for view_item, view_item_list, search, add_to_cart, and purchase to build strong remarketing audiences and improve ROAS.
