In this video, I’m sharing a letter—really, my honest perspective—on what it’s like to build a filmmaking career as a female creative. The truth is, our community is still scattered. I see photographers adding video, content creators trying to lead real productions, and self-taught filmmakers ready to turn passion into a business, but it’s hard to find all of us in one place. I also talk about what didn’t work for me for years: buying course after course, skipping straight to the “business” section, and finding two or three random videos with no structure—just breadcrumbs—while I was left alone to solve “unicorn situations” I’d never faced before. I break down why YouTube is amazing for gear and craft, but only takes you so far when you’re trying to build a sustainable business. I’ve been in the same boat—starting out in Bulgaria with no female filmmakers around, hitting dead ends with agencies and established DPs, and pushing through anyway by building my own production company and targeting dream brands internationally. That’s exactly why I created Her Film School: a roadmap to go from freelancer to creative business owner—positioning, portfolio, content and personal brand, productions and project management, marketing and analytics, client experience systems, pricing, and long-term sustainability. It’s a live cohort because you don’t need more information—you need structure, accountability, and community.
