About This Video

In this video I’m showing you exactly how I trim my natural hair at home, step-by-step, the same way I’ve been doing it for a while now. The last time I trimmed was about five months ago, so I was definitely overdue—and I show you what my ends were looking like before I started. When my ends are going in loads of different directions, looking split, and my hair doesn’t feel “free flowing” anymore (it feels weighed down and a bit dead), that’s my sign it’s time. I also talk about other signs like excessive shedding, breakage, and visibly thin ends. I walk you through the tools I use (clips, a wide tooth comb, a smaller tooth comb to smooth the hair, and sharp hair scissors—please don’t use kitchen scissors). Then I section my hair into four sections and work in smaller sections so the trim isn’t choppy and I can actually see what I’m doing. I’m trimming on blow-dried hair because it helps me see the ends better, and I do a little “analysis” on each section before I cut. My biggest takeaway: don’t be shy—if the ends are split and weighing your hair down, they need to go, because leaving them will just keep the split traveling up the hair.
