In this video I’m showing you how I achieve a sleek, salon-quality silk press at home from start to finish. I’m really big on saying this (because it’s true): the key to a good silk press is the prep. If you haven’t seen my wash day prep and at-home trim, go watch those first because without clean, properly prepped hair your silk press just isn’t going to come out how you want it to. I walk you through everything I use—heat protectant, a lightweight oil, my combs, clips, and my hot tools—then I section my hair into four and work in small sections. I use the tracing method (comb underneath, flat iron on top) and I go over my roots a couple of times to get them as straight as I can. After my first pass, I go back through in bigger chunks with the heat turned down (I drop it to about 190) and finish by bumping the ends. Once I’m done, I add literally a pea-size amount of oil for shine (not a lot—because I don’t want my hair weighed down). I also share timing so you know what to expect: my full head took me around two hours, and honestly this is one of the best silk presses I’ve done so far.
