About This Video

Packing annoys me, so obviously I tried to solve it with code. In this video I give myself one hour (starting at 10:34 PM, while I’m half-asleep) to build a “smart” packing list web app that’s better than my super static Notion template I duplicate for every trip. The idea is simple: you enter your destination and dates, I fetch the weather for that location, and the app suggests what to pack (like “pack a puffer” if it’s windy). I also wanted the satisfying stuff: a checklist you can tick off and a progress bar that tells you how much packing is left percentage-wise. I start by planning features and categories (I went with static categories like clothing, toiletries, electronics, documents, health essentials, shoes, accessories—because starting small wins). I design the screens in Canva (because I’m over Figma), then jump into React and try to ship fast. And then reality hits: Tailwind refuses to cooperate, CSS eats my time, components fight back, and suddenly the “easy one-hour build” becomes a late-night lesson in constraints. The takeaway is very build-in-public: sometimes projects don’t work out, especially when you’re coding at night and exhausted—but I still walk you through the plan, the UI, the stack decisions, and what I’d do next (aka: this probably needs a part two).
