I got access to a real startup's codebase and built a whiteboard feature from scratch in 7 days. Full stack - database schema, Supabase/PostgreSQL backend, Tldraw integration, drag-and-drop project linking - all in production. This is what building in public actually looks like. Built on Deaku - https://deaku.app/home?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=off+camera+sponsorships If you had 7 days of full access to your favorite app's codebase, what would you build? About This Video

A startup basically handed me the golden ticket: full access to their production codebase, no interview, no ā€œprove yourselfā€ phase—just ā€œbuild whatever you want.ā€ The product is Deaku (think Notion + Discord + Slack vibes, but built for YouTubers), and I had 7 days to ship something real. I started with an AI thumbnail generator because I genuinely hate making thumbnails, but after two days of research they told me they have a strong stance against generative AI beyond simple text. So yeah… back to a blank screen with a demo deadline. The pivot happened when I noticed I was bouncing between Mirror and Deaku’s Canvas to brainstorm. I was like: what if Mirror lived inside Deaku? So I pitched a whiteboard feature. Then came the scary part: system design, database schemas, and asking if I—someone not even on the team—could add new tables to their production Postgres/Supabase setup. I built iteratively with user stories: open from the toolbar, create multiple boards, delete boards, then integrate tldraw for the actual whiteboard. Day 6 was chaos: database errors, a last-minute pivot to local storage for the demo, and two hours of pure documentation + Stack Overflow energy to get custom components working so I could drag-and-drop real projects into the board. The biggest takeaway is the reason I said yes: I’d been creatively stuck, and ā€œaction produces information.ā€ Doing the terrifying thing is where the interesting stuff happens—and somehow, it shipped.
