About This Video

Lately I’ve been dealing with a super annoying problem: I open my laptop to code… and somehow I’m suddenly deep in Pinterest wallpapers or watching cooking videos. So I did what I always do when something annoys me—I built an app. In this video I set a 60-minute timer and tried to ship a Mac distraction-blocking app that forces me to admit what I’m working on, then pings me until I actually do it. I started by debating the tech stack (Flutter vs Electron). I wanted Flutter for performance, but I gave it literally one minute and bailed—too risky with the timer running—so I went back to Electron. From there it was classic build-in-public chaos: the app didn’t render at first (file path issue), notifications didn’t fire, and I lost time debugging. The turning point was realizing macOS + screen recording permissions were blocking notifications. Once notifications worked, I hit another limitation: macOS notifications can’t stay persistent the way I wanted. So I redesigned the logic—notify every 5 minutes, and if I ignore it, spam me every 30 seconds until I click ā€œI will focus.ā€ Then I made it fun with Duolingo-style messages like ā€œbreaking news: this task still needs your attention.ā€
