I was sitting in a cafe with exactly one hour of Wi‑Fi, and I desperately needed a Pomodoro timer on my Mac that didn’t feel like “meh” or cost money for a glorified timer. So I did the most logical thing: I tried to build my own cozy, minimal desktop timer from scratch, in public, against the clock. The goal was simple—type any number of minutes, hit Start, and (after I realized my mistake) also have a Stop button so I’m not stuck when I enter the wrong time. I chose Electron because I’m a web dev and it was the fastest way to get moving, but even then I hit the dumbest bug: I cloned the sample repo twice and my terminal was running the version sitting in Trash, so none of my changes showed up. Once that was fixed, I used ChatGPT to speed-run the UI and logic, then I made it “cozy and cute” with a coffee-shop background from Canva, a minimal two-screen flow (home vs running), and a lavender palette because that’s my vibe. I also packaged the app, added random inspirational quotes, and fought with the app icon at the last second—turns out macOS wants an ICNS file, not a PNG. End result: a real, searchable Mac app I can actually use, plus a reminder that LLMs help, but you still need to understand the code to debug it.
