In this first episode of my Endangered Language Series, I’m talking about Wolof and why I wanted to start highlighting languages that don’t always get the spotlight online. This video is extra special to me because I didn’t just read about Wolof—I got to study it while traveling this summer, and I had the chance to learn directly with native speakers. For me, that experience completely changes how a language feels: it stops being “a topic” and starts being a real, living way people connect, joke, and share culture. I also share a bit of the bigger picture of who I am as a language learner: I’m currently studying five languages (Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, and German), and I’m always trying to balance routines, journaling, and real-world practice. With this series, my goal is to bring curiosity and respect into the conversation—learning even a little bit of an endangered language can be a meaningful way to appreciate the people and communities who keep it alive.
