Hello friends! In this video, I talk about some of the methods to use and things to keep in mind when learning a new language through watching tv shows. I am using Turkish shows on a streaming service to demonstrate these as I am trying to get familiar with Turkish in preparation for starting a new Turkic language this fall. 00:00 - 04:07 Intro 04:08 - 05:00 Making Coffee 05:01 - 08:40 First Show 08:41 - 13:15 Second Show 13:16 - 15:58 Tips for Learning Through TV Shows 15:59 - 17:48 Ending Hi, my name is Laura and I am studying five languages (Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, and German). About This Video

In this first episode of my “learning through television” series, I sit down with a coffee and show you exactly how I use Turkish TV to start getting familiar with a new language. I’m not trying to “study Turkish perfectly” in one sitting—I’m using shows as a low-pressure way to train my ear, notice patterns, and get used to the rhythm and sounds before I dive into a new Turkic language later this fall. I walk you through two different shows and what I pay attention to as I watch. I also share the big things I keep in mind when using TV as a language-learning tool: choosing the right level of difficulty, not getting stuck translating every single line, and using subtitles strategically instead of letting them do all the work for me. The goal is to stay consistent, keep it enjoyable, and build comprehension over time—because if I’m not actually hooked on the show, I’m not going to come back tomorrow. By the end, you’ll have a realistic framework for turning “watching TV” into something that genuinely supports your listening and vocabulary growth.
