Salaam everyone! While speaking and listening skills are super important and great (if not quite challenging) learning to read and write in a language can be very useful and fulfilling! So here is why I think we should always learn the written language as well as what I know about the different types of written languages that we know of. Hi, my name is Laura and I am studying five languages (Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, and German). I have a passion for traveling and translation! About This Video

Salaam everyone! In this video I break down why learning to read and write in a language is just as important as speaking and listening (even though those skills can feel extra challenging). For me, the written side of a language is what makes everything click long-term: it helps me study more independently, understand grammar and vocabulary more clearly, and actually enjoy the process in a deeper way. Reading and writing can also be surprisingly fulfilling—like you’re unlocking a whole new layer of the language. I also give a beginner-friendly overview of the different types of writing systems we see across languages. Since I’m studying five languages right now (Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, and German), I’m always thinking about how scripts and spelling systems affect learning. I talk about why it’s worth approaching a new script with patience, how written language supports your goals (travel, translation, journaling, and daily study), and why I personally think we should always learn the written language alongside the spoken one whenever possible.
