About This Video

In this video, I teamed up with Barks to mess around with something I’ve been seeing more and more lately: really good two-handers throwing a backup ball. It got popular with Anthony Simonsen, but I’ve also seen players from places like Germany and Korea doing it too, so I wanted to actually understand the layout side of it instead of just “winging it.” We used the brand new Storm Concept as the test ball and built a layout that lets me throw it traditionally on the right side and also back up on the left side—without doing anything illegal like flipping the ball around. The big takeaway is that you can’t just assume your normal layouts will work for backup. We mapped my traditional PAP, my backup PAP, and even talked about the negative axis point (which almost nobody mentions). Because my traditional PAP and my backup negative axis were close (about an inch apart), we landed on a layout around 5 to 5 1/2 inches from axis that’s usable for both styles. On-lane, I compared the Concept to some of my go-to urethanes (IQ 78U, Pitch Black, Purple Hammer) and showed why the Concept’s weak core + strong cover gives me that smooth, controllable look—especially with rules changing and urethane getting restricted in some events.
