About This Video

In this three-minute short, I’m taking a quick look at the ScaleTrains HO EMD SD38-2 that’s coming in the late 2025 run, focusing on the McCloud and Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range (DMIR) schemes. I’ve reviewed this model in full on the channel before, so this is more of a fast preview and sound/feature highlight. I show how easy the unboxing is—lift the lid, you get a thick manual (12–15 pages), pull the plastic sleeve, open the clamshell, and you’re basically there. Just watch those truck immobilizers on the bottom, because they can make the locomotive tip over if you’re not paying attention. Side-by-side, I point out the differences between McCloud and DMIR, like antenna configuration and cab window details. The DMIR has bay windows (both sides), while the McCloud has a more traditional window with a sun shade. Detail-wise, these are beautiful: separately applied grabs, very detailed ends, silver-tipped MU hose ends, coupler cut bars, MU stands where applicable, and see-through dynamic brake and radiator fan grills. It’s also a heavy puller at about 1.24 pounds (522 grams). For lighting and sound folks, I highlight lit number boards and headlight, special lighting like walkway lights, dual beacons on the McCloud, and I give you quick bell and horn clips—plus the DMIR’s dual bells.
