In this three minute N scale short, I’m taking a quick look at Rapido’s Budd RDC rail diesel cars in both Amtrak and Southern Pacific schemes. I start with the unboxing, which is pretty straightforward: you get a long function/sound handout (21 functions listed, with a French side too), some stickers/decals with road numbers, and a few extra parts like a spare wheel, diaphragms, and doors. Then I pull the models out so you can see what Rapido’s doing with the details right out of the box. Up close, you can already spot differences between the SP and Amtrak versions—especially in the roof details—plus that nice metallic finish, tiny windshield wipers, and separately applied parts like the passenger stair access and grab irons. Rapido’s also famous for underside detail, and these definitely deliver (the camera honestly doesn’t do it justice). Then I get them into operation: these are equipped with DCC and ESU LokSound, so I demo the bell and horn and show off the lighting. You’ve got smooth interior lighting, numberboard lighting, and solid interior detail, so if you’re after a top-tier N scale commuter railcar with sound and lighting, these RDCs are worth a look at your local shop or online retailer.
