About This Video

In this 3inut review, I’m taking a close look at the Rapido HO scale EMD E8A, specifically this Louisville & Nashville unit. Right out of the box you’re getting ESU LokSound for DC and DCC, plus a Mo Power capacitor to help keep the locomotive moving when the track gets a little dirty or you momentarily lose pickup. I walk through the unboxing (manual, stickers, and an exploded parts diagram) and then get into what Rapido does best: the details. Detail-wise, this E8 is loaded. You’ve got etched metal windshield wipers, separately applied grabs, a separate horn, lift rings, and see-through radiator fan grills—including the dynamic brake fan—with winterization hatches on both sides for this version. I also point out the etched side grills and the underbody/sill detail Rapido is known for, along with all-wheel pickup. Around the ends you’ll see lift lugs, a diaphragm, accessory hoses with silver-tipped ends, and even little sight glasses/port holes on the side. The cab has interior detail and sun shades, and the whole thing has a nice, solid feel—this one weighs in at 1 lb 4.0 oz (571 g).
