About This Video

In this threeinut review I’m checking out the Atlas HO scale Trinity 5660 covered hoppers (4-bay hoppers), and I’ve got two roadnames on the bench: GACX with the blue GATX logo, and GACX with the Kagra Mills logo. I start with a quick unboxing of the Kagra Mills car—pretty straightforward packaging with the Atlas warranty card and foam side supports—then I get right into the details that matter if you’re into modern freight car realism. Up close, these cars are loaded with fine underbody plumbing that runs to each discharge bay, plus you get a coupler cut lever, brake line hose, and metal couplers. The etched metal crossover platform and the etched metal walkway are really sharp on these—no waves or distortions that you sometimes see on other brands. On the GATX version you’ve also got the FRA reflective striping, and the roller bearing caps are blue (they don’t spin, but they look the part). Once on the track, both cars are very free-rolling with no body wobble, and even the reporting marks are stamped on the trucks. This isn’t the first time Atlas has released these, but if you want them, grab them while you can—stuff goes quick in this hobby.
