In this video, I show you how to recreate Tana-style “supertags” inside Obsidian using the Metadata Menu community plugin. The core idea is simple: you can define a schema (a set of fields) that automatically applies to notes of a certain type, so your “Project” notes, “Book” notes, or “Meeting” notes all have consistent metadata without you manually remembering every property. I walk through installing the plugin, understanding how metadata works in Obsidian, and then building a supertag using a fileClass. From there, I add fields to the fileClass—things like selects, dates, and other structured properties—so each note becomes easier to capture, filter, and review. The real magic is editing: Metadata Menu gives you a UI to update fields not just at the top of a note, but in more flexible places like links and tables. I also demo how you can pair this with DataviewJS to generate editable tables for your notes, which is perfect for dashboards and project overviews. By the end, you’ll see a practical example of using these supertags for project notes so your planning stays clean, consistent, and actually usable.
