Backlinks are one of the fastest ways to understand what your notes are actually saying as a network—not just a pile of pages. In this video, I show you how I enhance Obsidian’s default backlink experience using two community plugins: Influx and Strange New Worlds. The big idea is simple: backlinks are invaluable, but the default view can feel a little “flat” when you’re trying to see why a link matters in context. First, I walk through the Influx plugin—how to install it, which settings I use, and how its backlinks view gives you richer surrounding context (like parent and child bullet points). Then I install Strange New Worlds (from TfTHacker’s repo) and compare the different backlink views side-by-side so you can choose what fits your workflow. I also show practical use cases—like quickly understanding where a concept is referenced, scanning link badges, and getting a clearer picture of how ideas connect—so your vault starts behaving more like an actual second brain for focused learning and deep work.
