About This Video

We need to talk about the power supplies some of you guys are buying—because when you’re building a PC on a tight budget (especially under $500), the PSU is where people try to save the most money. And that’s the one place I really don’t recommend cutting corners. Once you look past the marketing and even the certifications, a faulty unit can cause voltage fluctuations and, over time, it can straight up fry your system. In this video I break down the do’s and don’ts of budget PSU shopping: what features you can cut to save money, and what features you absolutely shouldn’t. I explain the 80 Plus efficiency ratings (white through platinum) and why higher efficiency generally means better quality and more stable power. My rule of thumb is simple: if your system is under 500W, white certified is usually fine; if you’re over 500W, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable with anything below bronze. I also talk about wattage—don’t buy 50–100W under what your system needs—and I show where you can safely downgrade, like skipping sleeved cables or modularity. And if you’re considering an off-brand unit like the Aresgame 650W, I tell you exactly how I judge it: reputable reviews, lots of them, and 4 stars and up.
