About This Video

With 2012 being exactly 10 years ago, I wanted to see what would happen if I took “best of the best” hardware from that era and tried to play modern games on it today. So I built a 2012-ish gaming PC around the Core i7-3770K and a super old Acer prebuilt motherboard, then paired it with a GTX 1650 as a stand-in since I don’t own a true period-correct high-end GPU like a GTX 690. The goal here was real performance and the experience—not perfect retro looks. One thing you’ll notice right away is it doesn’t look retro, and that’s on purpose. I used a newer case and a newer power supply because old PSUs can be dangerous and can straight up destroy your components, and building in a modern case is just easier. In testing, the 3770K honestly held up better than I expected: CPU usage usually stayed under 50% and temps sat around 50–60°C on an air cooler. Valorant averaged around 80–90 FPS on high, and Apex Legends surprised me at roughly 70–80 FPS average with some dips in heavier scenes. Minecraft was the weird one—100 FPS was possible, but it wasn’t consistent and could dip below 50 at high settings with 16-chunk render distance. Overall, for 1080p gaming, this old “top tier” hardware can still hit 60 FPS in a lot of games if you’re willing to adjust settings, and it’s pretty cool seeing how far it can be pushed.
