About This Video

I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but a lot of brands slap the word “gaming” on a product and suddenly the price goes up—while the quality doesn’t have to. In this video I’m talking specifically about “gaming headphones” and why, for most people, they’re just not the best value. Companies will try to sell you on some secret audio feature or fancy surround sound branding, but at the end of the day it usually isn’t going to make much of a difference for gaming compared to just buying a solid pair of regular headphones. What I recommend instead is simple: ignore the gamer marketing and look for highly rated over-ear headphones in your budget. I’ve personally used stuff like the Audio-Technica ATH-M30x and even cheaper options around that $40–$50 range, and you can get comfort, build quality, and sound that’s leagues better than a similarly priced “RGB gaming” headset. And if you think you need a mic, I’d rather you grab a cheap condenser mic on Amazon (around $30) than rely on most built-in headset mics, which tend to sound kind of nasally—especially if you’re streaming. Save your money, buy smart, and you’ll be all set.
