About This Video

In this episode Kelly joins me for a winter camp in Japan—she’s excited because she just started her own channel “Spicy Hippo”. We flew 7,300km for this, and when we arrived… wow. Mt Fuji was right there, truly magnificent. With Google Translator we grabbed groceries, drove past beautiful little towns, and then kept it simple at camp with a big awning and my rooftop tent. Camping in Japan is interesting because you often camp close to others, but you can barely hear anyone. Japanese people are super respectful—everyone is quiet but still having fun. It was around 0°C when we set up and it dropped to about -7°C at night, so I made hot coffee, started a cozy campfire, and even went to the mini shop for more firewood (hard wood this time). Kelly cooked Japanese cream stew, and I set up the diesel heater so the rooftop tent stayed nice and toasty. Next morning we got lucky with a clear Mt Fuji view. While Kelly slept, I showed the facilities—heated showers and those high-end toilets with bidet and even an auto lid. Then breakfast: onigiri and hot miso soup. Before heading to Nagano, we grabbed one more coffee right at the camp, and I shared some bonus Japan details like secure car parks, giant flip flops, vending machines, and smoking areas.
