About This Video

Welcome to another rainy adventure with me and Ted. In this episode I camp solo through heavy rain, wind, and thunder storms in South East Queensland—where the weather can flip from sunny to chaos in minutes. I had to move fast because that first storm crept in hard, and I knew my car awning would only survive the day if I treated it like “heavy equipment” and secured it properly. The big takeaway here is simple: in this kind of weather, drainage points are not optional. Water builds up insanely fast, and if you let it pool, the weight will push the awning down until the poles fail. Once the first blast passed, I turned the awning into a proper little hideout—bed set up for Ted, kitchen ready, and everything warm and cozy before the next cell hit. The second storm rolled in with that strange calm-before-the-storm feeling, but this time it had a quieter vibe with sunlight sneaking in from one side, which somehow made the rain feel even more powerful. I made a quick espresso, cooked salmon and veggies (omega-3 for Ted), then finished the night with a small heater, a German beer (yes… I failed the pour), and a movie. By morning the storms were gone, the sun dried all my gear, and I packed up without needing to dry anything at home—best feeling before heading back to the Big Smoke.
