Welcome to another cozy adventure with me and Ted — this time deep in a lush rainforest in Queensland, Australia. I drove about 1.5 hours from Brisbane and set up in the middle of a proper tropical storm. I resisted having an awning for a long time, but here I am… not only did I bring a 270-degree awning, I actually used it like a tent to sleep under. Setup is simpler and faster than a tarp (even though a tarp has more shape options), and the coverage on this one is huge. The built-in lights are exactly how I like it too — you can even choose the light color. I also got a bit carried away with coffee and misjudged the timing, so the storm hit before I fully secured everything. Lesson learned: have your poles and tie-downs ready, and don’t forget draining points — pooling will punish you fast. Once I set the draining points, it worked excellent and I stayed safe and dry even with heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. I cooked dinner for both of us (Ted got prawns and veggies, I made fried prawn yaki udon), enjoyed my “beer of the day,” then listened to the rain and slept. In the morning I freshened up at the creek, pulled another quality espresso, packed up easy, and headed back to the Big Smoke.
