Drama unfolded in my normally very quiet little ocean spot — sirens, police standing right next to my van, and everyone lining the walkway staring out to sea. I’d seen a couple of kids out on a board earlier and thought, “Gee, they’re quite far out,” and someone clearly felt the same and called it in. The water police turned up, but the kids ended up coming in on their own, and then got a pretty stern talking-to on the beach about water safety. Then the day flipped from hot, muggy summer heat (I’ve been struggling to sleep, it’s been almost 40°) into a full-on coastal thunderstorm. The ocean had been glassy and I’d been snorkeling all day, and then suddenly the wind came in so strong the sand was literally whipping at me. I thought it was going to be one of those calm storms where you can just sit in the water and let the rain fall on you… nope — the van was rocking and I had to lock everything up, which is the classic van life trade-off: cool air outside, but stuffy inside.
