Most of the time it’s not Betaflight—it’s the cable. You need a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable, or your flight controller won’t pass any info to the app. Also make sure you select the correct device (like Betaflight STM32) when the browser asks.

In this tutorial I’m using the online version at app.betaflight.com because it simplifies everything and stays updated. If you need a newer version, you literally just refresh the page. You can also use it out in the field once it’s loaded.

How do I bind ELRS to my radio in EdgeTX?

I create a brand new blank model, then I activate Internal RF and set it to CRSF (that’s the protocol for ELRS and Crossfire). Then I put the receiver into bind mode by plugging the quad battery in quickly three times, and I hit Bind in the ELRS script. If it worked, you’ll hear “Telemetry connected,” and when you unplug the quad you’ll hear “Telemetry lost.”

What channels should I use for arm, modes, and beeper in Betaflight?

On the radio I usually do ARM on channel 5, flight modes on channel 6, beeper on channel 7, and GPS on channel 8. In Betaflight those show up as AUX1 through AUX4 (AX1 = CH5, AX2 = CH6, etc.). Then you assign ranges in the Modes tab and verify the switches light up correctly.

My sticks move wrong in Betaflight—how do I fix the channel map?

Go to the Receiver tab and look at the channel map (AETR is common for ELRS). If roll/pitch/yaw/throttle don’t match the stick movements, change the mapping and re-check. Be careful—if the mapping is wrong, the quad can freak out and slide or launch violently on takeoff.

First you have to enable GPS in Betaflight, make sure the correct UART has “Sensor Input,” and set the protocol to UBLOX with Auto Config on (and Galileo if available). The big one: turn OFF “Allow arming without fix,” because you want a solid lock before you take off. You’ll typically get a home point lock around 8 satellites, and the quad will beep when it’s ready.

Props off, always—especially when you’re new. In the Motors tab you can spin motors one-by-one and confirm they match the diagram (I always say ‘right turn rear’ for a standard setup). A trick I use is a little 3-inch prop as a ‘tester’ so you can clearly see direction without the quad trying to take off.

How do I back up my Betaflight settings?

Go to the CLI and type “dump,” then save that text file to a folder on your desktop for that quad. You’re not going to remember every setting, and backups save you when you update firmware or something gets corrupted.
