About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down what I think is some of the most shocking drone news I’ve covered in a while: Lockheed Martin’s Star OS app paired with NetSense, running on a 5G “mesh” concept that can track and identify objects in a three-dimensional space. The easiest way to picture it is an invisible RF blanket over a city—over buildings, trees, mountains, cars, people, birds—everything. AI continuously scans for unique “signatures” in that space, and it can tell the difference between them to detect drone movement in real time. What really blows your mind is the claim that it doesn’t matter if your drone is actively transmitting from a radio link or even “flying freely” without emitting a signal—because the system is looking for disruptions in that RF blanket. The other wild part is that it can turn any cell phone into a drone detection device, which could eliminate the need for a lot of the separate counter-UAS sensors companies are selling (acoustic, RF detectors, and so on). It’s still described as prototype status, but the plan is for this to roll out and become something customers (like stadiums and major events) and eventually law enforcement can access—raising big questions about national security and personal privacy.
